Wild on the water, photos and text from the summer sand bar parties in Honolulu

Sand Bar Boat Party in Honolulu and Oahu!

iI's a sea of scenery at the summertime sand bar party in Honolulu.

Honolulu Nightlife and Bars

Lake Party at Lake Travis, Austin!

Motley Crue blasting on one side from a pair of powerful speakers on a speedboat and a gasoline-powered blender churning out margaritas on the other side. Bands playing on a floating stage.

These are the sounds of the summertime sand bar party in Honolulu.

This is one time a skipper would be glad to be stuck on a sandbar.

But it's the sites that attract the people, about 500 or so locals who gather at a large sand bar about a mile from the Ahu O'Laka Inlet on periodic weekends on summer Saturdays. Tanned and tanning, drinking and dancing, floating and frolicking, they are splashing and standing in ankle- and knee-deep water.

Some set up tents and become party hosts but most just walk around, pausing at the floating stage to dance on the water and go on mingling missions from boat to boat. It's wet. It's wild. It's wonderful. The sand bar party is more about soaking up the scene and suds than it is the sunshine.

Close to 100 boats of all kinds, from runabouts to fishing boats to skiffs, a large yellow catamaran and even an outrigger canoe drop anchor. PubClub was only too happy to toss out our anchor for an afternoon of entertainment as guests of the local legendary' nightclub, The Wave. To which, we say "mahalo."

To find out about future sand bar parties, stop in The Wave, THE place to party in Honolulu and especially the night before the sand bar. Naturally, access to a boat is required.

Normally, a boat skipper would not like to be stranded on a sand bar. They might shrug and say the Eric Stone line, "if you've not been aground, you've not been around" but otherwise wait for the high tide to set them free. Except here the object is to get "stranded." But with the essential party survivor supplies: Ice, beer, cocktails, perhaps a snack or two and that Hawaiian-style Aloha attitude.

Why is it girls in cowboy hats are always hot!?

Er, girls, could you hand us a beer?

Walk this way – girls make their way from one party station to another.

PubClub was there for Memorial Day '05 as were the PubClubettes.

The floating stage had bands and created a wet and wild "dance floor."

Boat drinks: The drink order of the day.

There's wildness on the water off Ohau's east coast.
