Michael Jackson Hollywood Blvd. Tribute!
The Scene at His Star On the Walk of Fame

Flowers fill Michael Jackson's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

For fans of the late Michael Jackson, having a few moments to pay tribute to him at his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was a real "Thriller."

Tens of thousands gathered on Hollywood Bvld. – but only a couple hundred at a time – in front of Grauman's Chinese Theater, carrying signs, paying respects and leaving flowers. For them, Michael Jackson left a legacy.

The scene was surprisingly serene, not at all Off the Wall as might be expected. Police had erected barricades and organized a timely procession of sorts, holding people back and then letting a dozen or so through about every minute. People were then allowed, with ample elbow room, to walk quietly up to the star and take photos, place an item on the sidewalk or simply spend a moment to reflect on the star's musical accomplishments.

It's a quiet, orderly procession to see the star's star.

Fans didn't stop until they got enough, as they were respective of others, being careful not to linger so more fans could have the same opportunity. Instead of telling people to "Beat It," police were smiling – "we have it all under control," one said – and this added to the stress-free atmosphere.

The setup had the feeling of an actual casket viewing at a funeral. Aside from all the media trucks, near-constant live reports and news helicopters flying overhead, it was quiet at his star. There was no music, no shrieks or screams from Pretty Young Things and nobody was yelling "Baby Be Mine" or other songs or lyrics. About all they did was lean over the barricade to snap a few photos.

There was however, a bit of a carnival atmosphere in the Hollywood and Highland area. Just about every celebrity look-alike street performer (Superman, Marilyn Monroe, Barney, even Zoro) were predictably there, hoping tourists would pay them a couple bucks to take a photo.

Other business-minded people were hawking t-shirts and both sides of legendary Hollywood Blvd., were three-deep with people. And the media were lined up like they wouldn't stop until they got enough. Which on Friday, the day after his death, seemed impossible.

The media is positioned on the other side of the star's star.

So the legend has passed. But for those who got to spend a moment at his star on the Walk of Fame, the memory will last as long as his music.
