Surf's up and the sun is down along the Newport Pier.

This part of the Golden State of California is known for its natural beauty under the brilliance of daylight. But as nightfall approaches, a different Newport Beach emerges, one that glows in a glory of spectacular beauty.

Sunsets are magical moments almost anywhere. Yet in Newport they are nature's version of painting the sky. With Catalina Island in the distance, the warm sun turns into a fireball, lighting up the scene around in a kaleidoscope of colors.Yet this is not some cheap children's toy. It's real.

It marks not just the end of the day but the beginning of a scene. Surfers are getting in their last waves of the day, locals stand on the decks of their houses along the Strand or at beachfront bars like Mutt Lynch's and tourists fill the parking lot staring at the dwindling sun in amazement. This doesn't happen everywhere.
