A review with photos of this historic hotel in the heart of the Quarter.

Welcome to the LeRichelieu!

The front of the LeRichelieu invites a traditional New Orleans stay.

On the edge of town, in a Southern city of grace and charm, sits a boutique hotel that defines old New Orleans tradition.

The red brick exterior supported by proud white columns inspire imagination andinvites inspection. Inside is the type of hospitality that brings people back to this city time and time again. The Le Richelieu hotel is old New Orleans in the heart of New Orleans.

Located on peaceful Chartres Street, isolated from the frenzy of the Quarter but close enough to be there in a few steps, it's a hidden gem that, upon discovery, brings the same satisfaction as finding a great out-of-the-way restaurant. It's on the far east side of the Quarter, two streets over from the French Market.

The Le Richelieu is one of two main types of hotels in New Orleans: Classic in look and design that brings on thoughts of the city's colorful past (the other primary hotel types are the large, modern chains, like the upscale Westin on the river's edge).

Come on in: The Le Richelieu is an inviting hotel with a classic lobby.

Le Richelieu's checkered-board lobby floor, intimate elevator, large room keys that must be turned into the desk each time guests exit the hotel and a staff that smiles whenever they see the guests make it seem as if the turn of the 20th Century never occurred. These types of hotels are packed throughout the Quarter like ice in a Hurricane.

The Le Richelieu is one of the finest examples and, at room rates from just $85-170, it's also one of the city's best bargains.

The rooms range from singles to suites and no two are identical. Some have kitchens with full-size refrigerators, others have doors that step out to a large, wooden balcony and one has a beautiful canopy bed (the Honeymoon Suite). All have free local phone calls (dial-up Internet) and, for those with rental cars, free parking. Beds are big and soft and the bathroom has large towels.

Outside, Le Richelieu has a pool surrounded by a courtyard patio, making it an ideal place to escape the ruckus of Bourbon Street just a few blocks away. It's part of the Terrace Cafe, an excellent restaurant with modest prices (many selections are under $10, including the omelet which was a PubClub breakfast favorite). Sunday brunches are quite popular with locals in the know.

While everyone is a celebrity at the Le Richelieu, it has hosted quite a few big names. Jimmy Buffett stayed here, perhaps in part because he could stumble over to his Margaritaville Cafe in less than a minute. Paul McCartney practically moved into the place and now has a large suite named in his honor ($225 a night; higher in peak seasons).
