Sunset Strip
Replica Gibson Guitars Salute Street's History

Jimmy Hendrix is part of the Gibson guitar display along the Sunset Strip.

Like a band exiting the stage, the Sunset Strip Beautification Project is at an end.

But, unlike a band's last set, there is no crowd yelling "one more, one more!"

Still, they may applaud.

The legendary Strip, a 1.6-mile section of Sunset Blvd., in West Hollywood, has undergone a minor facelift.

Actually, much remains the same from the past. The street has been resurfaced, broken sidewalks have been replaced and the sidewalk has been widened at Sunset Plaza, traffic signals have been upgraded and new medians, trees and "pedestrian enhancements" as the city calls them, have been added.

The Roxy rocks for the GuitarTown kickoff event.

But overall it looks pretty much the same, the exception being the addition of 26 10-foot tall fiberglass Gibson Les Paul guitar models that have been placed along the sidewalks, in front of businesses and at the legendary music venues such as The Roxy and Whiskey-A-Go-Go that have made the Sunset Strip, well The Sunset Strip!

Called
GuitarTown, it is a public art project that features 26 10-foot tall fiberglass Gibson Les Paul model guitars. The oversized Gibson sculptures were created by local and national visual artists with each guitar sculpture celebrating a musician, personality or influential moment unique to The Sunset Strip’s history.

The themes highlight the jazz era on The Strip, the ’60s counterculture movement as well pieces celebrating Slash, The Doors, Mötley Crüe and Sunset Strip music venues.

The unveiling of GuitarTown was launched with a Block Party on August 12 that included a ceremony with Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys at the Roxy/Rainbow Room and businesses along the boulevard hosting events and extended Happy Hours.

GuitarTown features replica guitars painted in Sunset Strip history.

This was the first time The Sunset Strip had been repaved since the County of Los Angeles replaced the original dirt road with concrete in the 1930s.
